Mohali Mayoral Poll Likely on August 17 or 18

The mayoral election of the Mohali municipal corporation was likely to be held on August 17 or 18 with colonizer Kulwant Singh, the rebel Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate who had contested and won as an independent, might turn out to be king or play kingmaker as he has the support of 11 independent councillors.

None of the parties managed to get a clear majority in the 50-member house in elections on February 24. While SAD-BJP combine has 23 seats, Congress 14 and 12 seats were with the independents. One seat got vacated due to the death of councilor Amteshwar Kaur (independent) of ward number 29. Kulwant Singh said, "I will be meeting with my team of independents to decide the next plan of action. Whatever decision is taken, it will be in the favour of residents."

While the SAD-BJP alliance need only three more seats to claim majority, the task appeared difficult with the Congress willing to back Kulwant Singh. Congress MLA Balbir Singh Sidhu said, "Our party will support anyone who is against the SAD-BJP. We are ready to back the Kulwant Singh group." However, Balwant Singh Ramoowalia, SAD in-charge of Mohali, was confident. He said, "The mayor and deputy mayor will be from Shiromani Akali Dal. We are sure we will win. We have not named or decided the candidature yet but will reveal that soon." Meanwhile, fearing horse-trading, Kulwant Singh has sent his group members to a hill station. Referance
